DWIGHT D. EISENHOWER

Dwight D. Eisenhower was born on October 14th, 1890. Eisenhower grew up in a traditional family and lived on a farm in Kansas. After finishing school, he went to university in West Point and graduated in 1915. Following university, he married Mamie Doud and together they had two sons.

Eisenhower served in the United States Army and fought during World War II. Eisenhower moved up the ranks and during the war he served as Army Chief of Staff and was involved with the planning and supervision of the invasions of North Africa in 1942, and France and Germany in 1944.  For example, he played an important role in the D-Day landings of World War II. Following the war, Eisenhower was appointed the first Supreme Commander of NATO.

In the years that followed his time in the military, Eisenhower worked as an American politician. In 1952 he entered the presidential race as a Republican. He ran against Senator Robert Taft. Eisenhower was successful in his presidential campaign, winning the election by a landslide. He was elected as the 34th President of the United States in 1953 and served in office until 1961.
During his time as president, Eisenhower continued, as previous presidents had, to put pressure on the Soviet Union. He also tried to reduce other Cold War related conflicts and in his first year as president he made efforts to end the Korean War, for example by threatening to use nuclear weapons. Eisenhower also sent aid to help France with their efforts in Vietnam, and financially supported other nations in their efforts. Also, he pushed congress to support his request for the Formosa Resolution which ensured that the People’s Republic of China was isolated and that the United States military supported the pro-Western groups in the Republic of China.

Eisenhower was also responsible for the establishment of NASA following the Soviet Union’s launching of the worlds first artificial satellite in 1957. With the development of NASA, the space race began.  He was also responsible for the development of the interstate system in the US, and the encouragement of the peaceful use of nuclear power. Near the end of his time as president Eisenhower wanted to set up a summit meeting with the soviets to try and reduce tensions between the two countries, but the plans fell through because of the incident involving the U2 spy plane.

Before stepping down as president Eisenhower gave a speech in which he told the nation of his financial concerns for the country, and also expressed his worries about how much the United States was spending on the military. He died on March 28th, 1969. President Eisenhower was, and still is, held in very high regards.
