RONALD REAGAN
Ronald Reagan was born on the 6th of February 1911 in Tampico, Illinois. His mother, Nelle Reagan was a house wife, and his father, John Reagan was a shoe salesman. After graduating from school Reagan worked in TV and then served in the army as a captain between 1942 and 1945. After the war Reagan was an actor. He was featured in a number of Hollywood movies and also became the host of the television show ‘General Electric Theatre’.
Reagan broke into politics in 1967 when he became the governor of California. In 1976 he ran for president but was unsuccessful. He progressed within politics and Reagan was eventually elected president in November 1980, towards the end of the Cold War. He was adamant to make America a ‘beacon of hope for those who do not have freedom.’ He was the 40th president of the United States and he was the first actor in American history to become United States president.
Reagan today is remembered for a several of his policies or accomplishments during the 1980’s. First, Reagan promoted an economic policy of “trickle-down economics”. This saw the United States undertake a period of lowering taxes, especially for the richest. As well, he had a lasting legacy as he pressured the Soviet Union to end the Cold War. For example, his famous speech at the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin Germany, is remembered as a pivotal moment in the final years of the Cold War. In the speech, he called on Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev to “tear down” the Berlin Wall. He built up the United States weapons and troops put into place the Reagan Doctrine which sent aid to countries to aid in anti-communist movements. He also formed and solidified the United States governmental set up as well as the conservative agenda.
Reagan survived an assassination attempt in 1981 and went on to serve for two terms as president after being re-elected in November 1984. Ronald Reagan was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease in 1994. He died on the 5th of June in 2004 at the age of 93 which made him the longest living president at the time.
