CITY OF ROME
Roulus founded the city of Rome in 753BC. Rome grew into a rich and powerful city over the course of a couple of hundred years. The city of Rome was the largest and most powerful place in the world during the reign of the Roman Empire. There were over 1 million people living in the city and it was also where the Roman government was based. It was also in Rome where many of the most important decisions about the Roman Empire were made.
There were loads of amazingly extravagant buildings built in Rome, many of which took years to complete. |
One of the most impressive and important buildings in Rome was the Colosseum which was where people would go to see gladiator and animal fights. The Colosseum, and many of the other important buildings in Rome were built around the forum which was where many of the cities activities took place. The forum was also where the government buildings and temples were built.
Many of the Roman emperors built grand buildings in order for people to remember them in years to come. There were also arches and statues built around Rome to celebrate Roman military victories and to remind the Roman people as well as foreigners about how important and powerful the Roman army was.
In contrast to the expensive buildings in Rome, there were also many wooden houses where the poor people used to live. The wooden houses were overcrowded and badly built. The poorest of Rome had no choice but to live in the houses and the government had to desire to improve the areas as they never visited them. However, as the houses were wooden and Italy is a hot place, there were a number of fires that destroyed huge areas of the Ancient Roman ‘slums’. Also, crime was rife, despite the creation of a police force in Rome because the police refused to patrol the slums.
